Vietnamese fruit growers improve fruit quality for export

Growers in the Mekong Delta are improving fruit quality in the face of tough competition with foreign fruits in the domestic market. At the same time, they gradually apply strict regulations on agricultural produce for export.

In these recent weeks, many gardeners in Tan Chau town of An Giang Province have enjoyed a bumper harvest of Hoa Loc mango and acacia mango. With 3.2ha of mangoes, farmer Chin Tuoi in Vinh Xuong Commune in Tan Chau town is harvesting acacia mangoes and selling them to traders in the garden at the price of VND8,000-VND14,000 a kg; he was so happy because he can earn a profit of several hundreds of millions of Vietnamese dong.

Dozens of gardeners in Vinh Xuong Commune are also harvesting Hoa Loc mangoes and selling them to traders for VND 30,000 a kg. The yield of Hoa Loc mango is from 5-6 tons per hectare; therefore, with the present prices, many gardeners have made significant profits.

Not only fruit growers in An Giang Province but their peers in Dong Thap Province are also making strides in approaching mango production associated with growing area codes to compete in the domestic market as well as export.

Currently, Dong Thap has nearly 42,000 hectares of fruit trees with about 14,000 hectares for cultivation of mango. Moreover, nearly 6,000 hectares of mango cultivation have more than 300 area codes. Mango grown in the province will be sold to Japan, Korea, the U.S., Europe, and China.

According to Mr. Le Quoc Dien, Deputy Director of Dong Thap Province's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province increased cultivation of mango both to remove technical bottlenecks and increase the fruit value chain and high-tech processing to increase the value of the agricultural produce.

In addition, many farmers in the Mekong Delta are focusing on production towards VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to export to China and other tough markets. Recently, growers in the region have had new opportunities when pomelo was licensed to enter the US market.

The agricultural sector in Tien Giang has formed a concentrated fruit-growing area with large output to supply the market. For instance, more than 120ha of pomelos are planted according to VietGAP standards in Tan My Chanh Commune in My Tho City and all fruits will be sold to an enterprise. Currently, local authorities are encouraging people to switch to growing pomelos according to VietGAP standards, high technology for export.

It is expected that the first batch of green-skinned pomelo grown in Ben Tre Province will be exported to the US market at the end of November 2022. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thu, Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import Export Group Company in Cho Lach District of Ben Tre Province, the company and five pomelo production cooperatives spent five years growing the fruit according to VietGAP standards.

It is expected that the company will export about 40 tons of pomelo to the US market. Thus, Ben Tre green-skinned pomelo is the first fruit of the Mekong Delta to be exported to the US market. Previously, mango, longan, litchi, dragon fruit, rambutan and star apple were also exported to fastidious markets in Europe.

According to Mr. Lam Van Linh, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department of Ben Tre Province, building the planting area code is a business's survival in the coming time to meet the technical barriers through quality standards. Good agricultural practices and clear planting area codes will help increase the opportunity to export fruits to many countries.

Meanwhile, the Department of Crop Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that ineffective rice area in the Mekong Delta has been successfully transformed into fruit areas. Since the beginning of the year, roughly 73,530ha of rice land in the Mekong Delta has been converted to other crops, mainly the cultivation of fruit trees.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reporter that in the first 10 months of 2022, the export turnover of main agricultural products reached over US$18.8 billion, up 7.2 percent. There are 8 products and product groups with an export value of over $2 billion, of which the fruit group reaches nearly US$2.8 billion.

Links between farmers and enterprises vital to promoting agricultural product quality, exports

Ensuring the stable and consistent quality of agricultural products of cooperatives is critical to achieveing sustainable exports, in which the linkage with enterprises played a key role.

Unstable and sub-standard quality of agricultural products remained the biggest worry for exporters.

Nguyen Trung Dong, Principal of the College of Management for Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the export market for agricultural products was expanding. China this year officially opened its doors for five products of Vietnam. However, high standards were set to ensure quality.

While cooperatives were identified, together with enterprises, as the core force for agricultural production, the production quality remained below expectations, he said.

Ho Duc Minh, Director of the Van Xuan Phat Import-Export Company – one of 25 packers granted codes to officially export durian to China – said that farmers played an important role in the supply chain. However, many of them did not pay attention to ensuring product quality.

Ngo Tuong Vy, Deputy Director of fruit export company Chanh Thu, said that there was a lack of uniformity in product quality as farmers and cooperatives did not cooperate with each other to follow certain standards.

Bui Ba Bong, former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the agricultural sector was aiming to build production areas in which every participant was held accountable and managed with transparency.

Only when the linkage between cooperatives and enterprises was enhanced, could Vietnam’s agricultural products move forwards and ensure sustainability.

According to Pham Thi Thu Hien, Director of the Plant Phytosanitary Centre 2, many markets requested that the growing areas and packing facilities of exporting countries be put under close monitoring with codes issued periodically.

Growing areas and packing facilities needed to comply with the requirements of each market, which would differ among products, and even between the same product she said.

Hien said that the issuance of codes for planting areas and packaging facilities was mainly for fruit but not for products with large export volumes such as rice, tea, pepper, and coffee. There were still instances of fraud in the use of growing area codes, which was affecting the prestige of Vietnamese products, she said.

Hien said that enterprises should work closely with farmers to develop the growing areas and protect the codes, as well as improve product quality.

Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Agro Processing and Market Development Authority, said that besides following standards like VietGap and GlobalGap in harmony with the requirements of import markets, cooperatives needed to make plans for production and processing in line with investment in equipment to produce products with high quality.

Training on phytosanitary rules should also be provided regularly, Hoa added.

Stressing that ensuring product quality to meet export standards was a pressing concern, Hoa said that the Government should implement consistent policies in developing cooperatives and the rural economic sector together with support to improve quality standards for agricultural products.

Bui Phuoc Hoa from the Business Association of High-Quality Vietnamese Products said the linkage between farmers and enterprises should be strengthened together with transparency in responsibilities and benefits.

Guidance should be provided to help farmers increase their understanding of the benefits when complying with standards and ensuring stable and consistent product quality.

A variety of products from Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises were on display at the event, with the majority of domestic brands coming from the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas).

Many importers visited the Trade Office’s booths and showed a keen interest in high-quality Vietnamese products.

The Vietnam Trade Office in Australia also organised an exhibition to introduce local garment and textile products via digital platform Vietnamsourcingexpo.com, attracting the participation of dozens of businesses from November 17 to 25.

Nguyen Phu Hoa, head of the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia, emphasised that involvement in the two exhibitions will help local firms to seize additional opportunities as they gain access to the Australian market.

He emphasised that through these events, Australian businesses are looking forward to seeing a greater presence of Vietnamese products in their market, which is considered to be a centre for textile and leather production in the region.

The Vietnam Trade Office in Australia will therefore continue to conduct trade promotion in an effort to further strengthen connectivity among Vietnamese suppliers and Australian importers.

First lot of Tan Lac red-flesh grapefruit exported to UK

The first lot of 5,400 Tan Lac red-flesh grapefruits of the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh was exported to the United Kingdom on November 24.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Dinh Cong Su said that this is a result of the joint effort of the provincial agricultural sector, cooperatives and locals in Tan Lac district.

The export of this fruit will be a great encouragement for local farms to strive for more export shipments of other agricultural products, he added.

Nguyen Huy Nhuan, Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that in addition to the expansion of cultivation areas, locals’ application of science and technology in the production has increased and they are well aware of the role of organic fertilisers.

Besides red-flesh grapefruit, Tan Lac is also shipping its sugarcane abroad. This year, the district has been granted six planting area codes for grapefruit to be exported to the European Union.

Currently, the district is growing citrus, including orange and grapefruit, on 1,523 hectares, of which 1,420 hectares are for business with an estimated output of 22,200 tonnes.
