Attending the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)’s video meeting on June 17 on the situation in Haiti and activities of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) in the country, Quy voiced his concern over difficulties and social and political instabilities in the African nation, and condemned violent acts and kidnappings of criminal groups.
He called on the international community, including regional countries, to support the political process in Haiti, and the organisation of elections in a peaceful environment.
The Vietnamese diplomat proposed the Haitian government to come up with practical measures to thoroughly solve poverty and socio-economic instability, while calling on the international community and regional countries to continue supporting socio-economic development in the country, especially economic development and job creation projects.
He spoke highly of the BINUH's measures to support Haiti over the past time, and emphasised the role of regional countries and international organisations in this activity.
Quy reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for Haitian people for peace, security and development in the country.
Speakers at the event said that the situation in Haiti continued to face many difficulties, especially issues related to elections and constitutional amendments.
They stressed the need for the Haitian government to strengthen measures to prevent violence and implement a plan to dismantle armed criminal groups.
Representatives from UNSC member countries also condemned acts of violence, attacks and kidnappings against civilians, especially women and children, in Haiti. They urged the government and political parties to promote dialogue to reach political consensus for elections in 2021.
They highly valued the role played by the BINUH in assisting the Haitian government in political dialogue and constitutional reform, and asked the international community and countries to continue support for the country in addressing current challenges.
Established in 2019, the BINUH is responsible for advising the Government of Haiti in promoting and enhancing political stability as well as many other areas. The UNSC holds regular meetings every 4 months to hear reports on the office’s operation./.
