Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, made the affirmation during the 3 rd Committee of the 69th Session of the General Assembly on Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in New York on October 30.
She stressed that peace, stability and development remain the strong aspirations of the international community, which lay the foundations for the protection and promotion of all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The ambassador underlined the central role played by the United Nations in advancing cooperation among countries in the field, affirming that the Human Rights Council, with its Universal Periodic Review, has proven to be essential in facilitating dialogue and cooperation among member states on human rights issues of mutual concern and ensuring all social, economic, cultural, civil and political rights.
Dialogue, technical assistance and capacity building should be further strengthened to assist all countries to ensure human rights for their people, particularly women, children, people with disability, the elderly, ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups, she said.
On the occasion, the official also introduced participants to Vietnam’s policies and achievements in guaranteeing human rights.
In its first year as a member of the Human Rights Council, Vietnam has taken up its role with the highest level of responsibility and substantively contributed to the work of the Council, she said, adding that Vietnam is strongly committed to working with member states to ensure that the Council will continue to fulfill its mandates in the interest of each and every human being.
Vietnam has continued efforts to better ensure the human rights of its people. The legal frameworks have been further strengthened while various socio-economic programmes are implemented to ensure social security and improve the people’s living standards.
During the discussion, representatives from UN member states stressed the need to focus on developing and ensuring basic rights related to health care, education, food, as well as protecting rights of vulnerable groups.
They also voiced their concern on political instability in several countries, global economic crisis, food security, diseases and climate change, which caused a humanitarian crisis and effected the enjoyment of basic human rights.
Participants called on the UN to continue supporting its member nations to tackle challenges so as to better ensure basic human rights.
