Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang provides updates on Vietnam’s foreign policy and citizen protection efforts.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ regular press conference on January 9, spokesperson Pham Thu Hang responded to questions about Vietnam’s potential interest in joining BRICS, a group that recently welcomed some Southeast Asian countries as official members or partners.

Vietnam's stance on multilateral engagement

As a proactive and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam consistently contributes to peace, stability, and global development through various multilateral mechanisms and organizations.

Vietnam adheres to a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and diversification of international relations, striving to be a reliable partner and a responsible global community member.

Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang emphasized that Vietnam’s participation in international and regional mechanisms is always thoroughly studied to ensure it aligns with the country’s foreign policy priorities, conditions, and capabilities.

During the press conference, the spokesperson also provided updates on the protection of Vietnamese citizens abroad, including incidents in South Korea and China.

Ferry capsizing in South Korea

On December 30, 2024, a ferry capsized off the west coast of Seosan, Chungcheongnam Province, South Korea, resulting in multiple fatalities, including one Vietnamese national.

Vietnam’s Embassy in South Korea promptly coordinated with local authorities and the victim’s employer to notify the family and assist with funeral arrangements.

Efforts to investigate the incident and support rescue and recovery operations are ongoing, with the embassy ensuring the legal rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens are fully protected.

Earthquake in China

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet, causing significant casualties and injuries.

The Vietnamese Embassy in China has been working with local authorities to monitor the situation and verify whether any Vietnamese citizens have been affected.

As of now, no Vietnamese casualties have been reported.

The embassy remains in close coordination with local agencies to provide timely assistance and protection if needed.

Vietnamese citizens requiring urgent assistance are encouraged to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ citizen protection hotline or the Vietnamese Embassy in China.
