The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is expected to hold the draw for the Asian qualifiers for the 2030 FIFA World Cup on December 15, 2026, a key milestone as national teams prepare for their campaigns to reach football's biggest tournament.

According to the October 2026 FIFA rankings cited in the latest projections, Vietnam sit 99th in the world and 17th in Asia. That position would see the team, coached by Kim Sang Sik, advance directly to the second qualifying round, with a strong chance of being placed in Pot 2.
Notably, Thailand are also expected to be in the same pot, having climbed to 93rd in the world rankings. If the projected seedings remain unchanged, the two Southeast Asian rivals would avoid each other in the group stage.
However, Vietnam, known as the Golden Star Warriors, could still face familiar regional opponents such as Indonesia, Malaysia or the Philippines, all of whom are projected to be in Pot 3.
A tougher challenge would come from Pot 1, which is expected to feature some of Asia's strongest teams, including Japan, South Korea, Iran, Australia and Saudi Arabia.
Under the proposed format for the second round of Asian qualifying for the 2030 World Cup, 36 teams will be divided into nine groups, playing each other home and away. The top two teams from each group will advance to the third qualifying round.
For Vietnam, maintaining or improving their position in FIFA's top 100, strengthening the squad and ensuring thorough preparation will be key priorities as they look ahead to the 2030 World Cup qualifying campaign.
