The first official visit to Vietnam from July 7-10 2012 by General Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, President of the State Council and the President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba, marked a new milestone in the traditional solidarity, friendship and comprehensive cooperation between two parties, states and peoples of two countries.
During their talks, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong informed President Raul Castro Ruz about socio-economic situations in Vietnam, historical achievements obtained during 26 years of Doi moi (renewal) process and emphasized difficulties, challenges and lessons drawn from the reality of directing and instructing the cause of national construction and defence. He affirmed that the Vietnamese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party, would continue to persistently pursue the target of national independence and socialism, the Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh thoughts.

President Raul Castro Ruz acclaimed great achievements of the renewal process initiated and led by the Communist Party of Vietnam and considered it a support and valuable experience to Cuban people in its current reform, particularly in the period when Cuba is carrying out its economic reform, officially labeled as an “updating of the economic model”.
He also appreciated the increasing role and prestige of Vietnam in Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific as well as at international forums. He surely believed that Vietnam would continue implementing successfully the Resolutions of the 11th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and obtain more achievements in the cause of national modernization and industrialization for the target of “rich people, powerful country, democracy, justice and civilization”, firmly towards to socialism.
The two leaders exchanged views on multi-faceted relations between two parties and states and also discussed how to deepen their ties with measures to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of economic, trade and investment cooperation, suitable to new situations and benefits of each nation.
The leaders also agreed to strengthen the exchange of all level of delegations and reality experience and theories, particularly in the work of building the party and the work of cadre and intensify coordination and mutual support at international forums where the two countries are members.
During his stay in Vietnam, President Raul Castro Ruz had talks with State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
