VN defeat strong rival N Korea
Viet Nam defeated North Korea, reportedly a strong player, at the ongoing 2014 VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup in the northern province of Bac Ninh yesterday.
Overwhelming the rivals in three sets (25-18, 25-19, 27-25), the host ended its fourth match with a score of 3-0, the team's third victory so far.
In another two matches yesterday, viewers witnessed Thailand triumph over Yunnan, China, 3-1 and Kazakhstan beat Australia 3-2.
Viet Nam will play Kazakhstan this afternoon, the final day of the qualifying round. The best four will compete in the semifinals matches on Friday. The final will take place the following day.
HCM City win swimming tourney
Teenager Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram completed a haul of eight golds and six records as HCM City won the National Junior Swimming Championships yesterday.
HCM City's swimmers dominated their opponents at the Tuyen Son Sports Complex to claim a total of 56 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals.
The Military Sports Centre 5 finished second with 11 golds, eight silvers and five bronzes, while Quang Binh came third with eight golds, eight silvers and nine bronzes.
Tam wins second stage of An Giang
Ha Thanh Tam yesterday claimed the second stage of the "Return to the Countryside" cycling tour, also known as the An Giang Plant Protection Cup.
Tam, from Gao Hat Ngoc Troi An Giang, beat Phan Hoang Thai of Domesco Pharmacy Dong Thap to the finish line to win the stage in a time of 2:59.58 over the 110km stage from Kien Tuong Town to Thanh Binh District in Dong Thap Province. Tran Nguyen Duy Nhan of Military Zone 7 finished third.
Tam retains the yellow jersey with a best overall time of 4:42.53 after two stages.
In the team competition, Military Zone 7 have taken the lead with a time of 14:09.57, followed by An Giang.
Today, cyclists will compete across the third stage from Cao Lanh City in Dong Thap to Tieu Can District in Tra Vinh Province.
Top seeds win final berth in over-18
Top seeded Military duo Huynh Chi Khuong and Tran Thanh Hoang overcame Van Huu Nguyen Vu and Vo Van Toan from Da Nang 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-5 to win the final match of the National Men's Tennis Championships' over-18 category yesterday in Dak Dak Province.
They will play the final match against Le Quoc Khanh and Pham Huu Vinh of HCM City, who came from behind to beat Nguyen Hoang Hai and Minh Hung from Binh Duong 5-7, 7-6 (3), 10-6.
In the U14 singles event's semi-finals, Vinh Phuc's Hoang Viet easily defeated Trung Khang from Binh Duong 6-2, 6-2. His championship match rival will be Hoang Hung from HCM City.
The U16 singles final will see Nhut Hoang of HCM City versus Viet Hoang, another Vinh Phuc citizen.
In the U18 singles, the four quarter-finallists are Trinh Linh Giang, Hoang Thanh Trung and Nguyen Dac Tien (Ha Noi) and Tran Hoang Anh Khoa (Military).
