From May 29 to June 6, 2015, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in Kazakhstan and paid official visits to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, the Portuguese Republic and the Republic of Bulgaria.

In Kazakhstan, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Prime Ministers of EAEU’s member countries, namely Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, participated in the official signing ceremony of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union. This was the second FTA that Vietnam signed in May, following a similar agreement with the Republic of Korea, and is one of the new FTAs that Vietnam has worked towards with important partners.

The conclusion of the Vietnam-EAEU trade pact offers enormous opportunities for Vietnam to promote trade and investment ties with a market of over 170 million people that has recorded a total GDP of above 4 trillion dollars and has a trade value of nearly one trillion dollars. This was also the first FTA between the EAEU and an outside partner, proving the special interest of the union’s members in promotion of economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam.

In Algeria, the two sides set a target of increasing the two-way trade to over one billion dollars from the current level of 250 million dollars. The two sides also committed to support cooperation on oil and gas and pledged to consider cooperation on agriculture through sending Vietnamese agricultural experts and engineers to Algeria.

In Portugal, the leaders saw eye to eye on raising the bilateral trade volume from 360 million dollars to over one billion dollars in the future. The two sides also defined potential fields for cooperation, including marine economy and tourism, which both countries choose to prioritise in their development strategies and see considerable similarities to share with each other.

Meanwhile, Vietnam and Bulgaria have put in place a number of directions and measures to implement the new economic cooperation model that the two countries’s leaders agreed on. Bulgaria considers Vietnam a key partner in its international development cooperation plan in 2015.

The focal point of was economic cooperation, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the countries’ leaders exchanged opinions about international issues of mutual concerns. The countries shared concerns over recent complicated developments in the East Sea, particularly the reclamation and artificial island building as well as military buildup in the East Sea.

They underlined the need to maintain peace, stability, safety and stability as well as maritime, navigation and aviation freedom while settling disputes by peaceful measures without threat or use of force in accordance with general principles of international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The nations also backed the observance and full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the conclusion of a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.
