VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam women’s chess team tied with Cuba 2-2 in the eighth round of the ongoing 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Tuesday.

Grandmaster Vo Thi Kim Phung (Elo 2368) lost to Lisandra Teresa (Elo 2415) in the first board. Pham Le Thao Nguyen (Elo 2347) beat Lopez Yaniet (Elo 2281) in the second board to help Vietnam level the point.

In the third and fourth board, Hoang Thi Bao Tram and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung tied with their rivals.      

With this draw, Vietnam rose up two steps to reach 17th after eight matches. They will next face Georgia 3, who are in 56th place.

On the men’s side, Vietnam also tied with Kazakhstan 2-2.

Top Vietnamese player Le Quang Liem (Elo 2715) lost to Jumabayev Rinat (Elo 2605). Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2620) continued to prove his impressive form with a win against Ismagambetov Anuar (Elo 2538).

Tran Tuan Minh (Elo 2491) was defeated by Kazhgaleyev Murtas (Elo 2582). Sixteen-year-old Nguyen Anh Khoi (Elo 2463) drew with Makhnev Denis (Elo 2449).

After eight rounds, the Vietnam male team temporarily rank 18th. They will take on the Swiss, in 39th place, in the ninth round.
