Today (November 13), Education First officially released the 2024 Global English Proficiency Index (EPI 2024).
The EPI 2024 is based on the test results of 2.1 million non-native English speakers aged 18 and older from 116 countries and regions.
According to the EPI results, countries are classified into English proficiency levels: Very High (above 600 points), High (550-599 points), Moderate (500-549 points), Low (450-499 points), and Very Low (below 450 points).
In 2024, Vietnam’s English proficiency score is 498, placing it in the Low category. Last year, Vietnam scored 505, falling in the Moderate category.
In this year’s global ranking, Vietnam is 63rd out of 116 countries and regions, down five places from its 58th position in 2023.
Vietnam's highest ranking was 52nd in 2019.
In Asia, Vietnam ranks 8th in English proficiency, trailing Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
Compared to 2023, Vietnam has slipped from 7th to 8th in Asia, with Bangladesh overtaking Vietnam’s previous position. However, Vietnam still ranks higher than several regional countries, such as Indonesia (80th), China (91st), and Japan (92nd), in the 2024 EPI.
