Vietnam ranked among the top eight at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics, with all four students receiving awards, including one gold and two silver medals.
Vietnam won one gold medal and two silver medals at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), placing the country among the top eight participating nations and territories, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.
All four Vietnamese students competing at this year’s Olympiad received awards, bringing home one gold medal, two silver medals and one honorable mention.
The gold medal went to Nguyen Huu Tuan, a 12th-grade student at the High School for Gifted Students under the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The two silver medals were won by Dang Huy Hau, an 11th-grade student at Thang Long High School for the Gifted in Lam Dong Province, and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, a 12th-grade student at the High School for Gifted Students under the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Nguyen Khanh Phuc, a 10th-grade student at Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted in Ninh Binh Province, received an honorable mention.
The 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics is being held in Uzbekistan from August 9 to 16, bringing together 375 official contestants from 92 countries and territories. Contestants from Russia, Belarus, Israel and Turkmenistan are competing under the Olympic flag.
A total of 188 contestants won medals, including 32 gold, 62 silver and 94 bronze medals, while another 42 received honorable mentions.
Based on the medal table published by the organizers, Vietnam was among the eight highest-performing countries and territories, behind China, South Korea, the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Poland and Türkiye. Teams competing under the Olympic flag were not included in the country rankings.
Student wins two international gold medals in one week

Nguyen Huu Tuan delivered an exceptional performance on the international Olympiad circuit, winning gold medals at two global competitions within the space of just one week.
After taking gold at the 2026 International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence in Kazakhstan, Tuan followed up with another gold medal at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics in Uzbekistan.
He has now collected four international gold medals and two silver medals.
His gold medals came at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence in 2025 and 2026, the 2026 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad and the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics.
He previously won silver medals at the 2024 International Olympiad in Informatics and the 2024 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad.
Under IOI rules, contestants sit two official competition days. On each day, they have five hours to solve three programming problems on computers, covering a broad range of challenges. This year’s problems were considered particularly difficult.
The Ministry of Education and Training said the Vietnamese team’s performance at the 2026 IOI further demonstrates the country’s standing in high-level international academic competitions and reflects the effectiveness of efforts to identify, select and nurture talented students.
The closing and awards ceremony is scheduled for August 15.
