The decision reflects strong confidence in the South Korean coach, whose contributions have been instrumental in the team’s recent achievements. VFF General Secretary Nguyen Van Phu praised Lee’s role in elevating the performances of both the senior national team and the U23 squad over the past period.
Since arriving in Vietnam, Lee Woon Jae - a compatriot of head coach Kim Sang Sik - has made a clear impact, particularly in developing the country’s top goalkeepers. His work has been closely tied to a series of notable results, including Vietnam’s ASEAN Cup 2024 title, a perfect run in the Asian Cup qualifiers to secure a place at the 2027 finals, a gold medal at SEA Games 33, and a bronze finish at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup.
Speaking after the renewal, Lee expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by VFF leadership. He also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with Kim Sang Sik and the coaching staff to achieve the team’s upcoming objectives.
Born in 1973, Lee Woon Jae is widely regarded as one of South Korea’s greatest goalkeepers. During his playing career, he earned 133 international caps and featured in four FIFA World Cups (1994, 2002, 2006, 2010). His most memorable achievement came at the 2002 World Cup, where South Korea finished fourth, alongside third-place finishes at the 2000 and 2007 Asian Cups.
At club level, he spent the majority of his career with Suwon Samsung Bluewings before a final stint at Jeonnam Dragons, making a total of 451 appearances. His honors include the AFC Champions League title in the 2001/02 season, four K-League 1 championships, and three Korean FA Cups. Individually, he was named K-League Player of the Year in 2008 and earned multiple selections in league and continental best XI teams.
The extension of Lee Woon Jae’s contract signals a commitment to stability within Vietnam’s coaching structure, as the team prepares for a demanding journey at the Asian Cup 2027. With continuity on the sidelines and growing confidence on the pitch, Vietnam aim to build on recent momentum and make a deeper impact on the continental stage.
