The semi-final match saw hard-hitting Tran Thi Thanh Thuy score five consecutive points to lift Vietnam to a sensational 25-21 win against Japan in the first set.
Japanese players went on to reverse the situation in dramatic fashion, going on to take the lead in two sets with scores of 25-14 and 25-22.
After scoring eight consecutive points, the team led by coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet won the fourth set 25-20. In the final set Japan dominated the game and easily trounced Vietnam 15-11.
The Vietnamese volley ballers finished fourth at the Asian volleyball championship after losing to Japan with an overall score of 3-2, marking the best result achieved by a Vietnamese team so far.
In the past, the country’s best results in the competition include finishing fifth in 2015 and 2017.
Later the same day Thailand defeated China in the final match to lift the 2023 Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship.
This marks the third time that Thailand has triumphed in the Asian tournament.
