VietNamNet Bridge - The first completely indigenous made-in-Vietnam oil-rig in Dai Hung Mine, 265 kilometers from the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau is now complete and fully operational.

Dai Hung 2 oil-rig is the first large-scale deepwater project undertaken by solely Vietnamese engineers and workers using the latest innovative technology.

The main investor of the Dai Hung Mine development project is Petro Vietnam Domestic Exploration Production Operating Company, a member of Petro Vietnam.

According to Hoang Ba Cuong, general manager of Dai Hung Mine project, the management cost of this made-in-Vietnam project is only one-third compared to the project undertaken earlier by foreign companies.

The DH2 oil-rig on Dai Hung Mine was the result of a tireless effort by Vietnamese engineers complying with strict technical standards of quality and accuracy.

The Dai Hung Mine is a crude oil and natural gas mine in the East Sea and the exploration drilling of the Mine was carried out by Joint Venture Vietsopetro Company earlier.

When one after another of foreign investors withdrew from this mining project due to decrease in oil prices, Dai Hung Mine was totally placed under Petro Vietnam management in 2003.

After the Mine development project was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in 2009, Joint Venture Vietsovpetro was selected to undertake the project, with the task of constructing the DH2 oil-rig and improving the existing DH1 rig. The investment for this project was US$66 million.

Five oil wells lay under DH2 oil-rig. The first one, DH-12P, began pumping roughly 7600 barrels of oil per day, earlier than expected.

Engineer Tran The Hung, who opened DH-12P, was one of the first to witness the oil erupt. More than 100 engineers and workers on DH2 oil-rig were so excited they found it difficult to sleep that night.

The second well will be opened later this month and the other three will be brought into use every 25 days. With all five wells operational, production on DH-02 oil-rig will surge to 18,000 barrels a day, from the present 4000 barrels.

“The success of DH2 oil-rig showed Vietnam’s ability to utilize modern technology in setting up oil and gas exploitations in offshore deepwater area,” Cuong stated. “This is a great moment of pride for the whole staff in the oil and gas industry.”
