Chuseok holiday is  a major mid-autumn harvest festival and a three-day holiday in Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month of the year.

A survey recently unveiled by Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) shows more than 1 in 10 Koreans plan to travel abroad during the 2024 Chuseok holiday.

The most popular travel destinations are Japan, with 31.1%, and Vietnam, in second position with 18.0%. The preferred reasons for choosing travel destinations include short flight distances, favourable exchange rates, and cost-effectiveness.

The survey was conducted from August 1-7 with 1,270 respondents aged 18 and older who have traveled through Incheon Airport over the past five years.

Notably, 11.2% of those surveyed reported intentions to travel internationally during the holiday. This is the highest percentage since the first survey conducted in 2020. The corresponding figures in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 were 1.9%, 2.0%, 3.2% and 9.3%.

About 74.8% of the respondents plan to travel short distances, up 3.9% from 70.9% in 2023.

IIAC estimates that an average of 201,000 passengers will use Incheon Airport each day during the Chuseok holiday period this year from September 13-18.
