An exhibition of lacquer paintings by 14 Vietnamese artists will be
held in Ganaisa Art Centre, Seoul, Republic of Korea (RoK) from July 15
to 20.
The event, co-organized by Hanoi’s Art Tunnel Gallery
and the RoK’s Hansea Vietnam and sponsored by HansaeYes24 Foundation and
Hansae Fashion Worldwide group, is expected to boost cultural exchange
between the two countries, and promote Vietnam’s culture to RoK and
international friends.
Named “Mot thoang son mai Vietnam” ( Vietnamese lacquer at a glance), the event will introduce 42 art works .
The
RoK’s art centre was established in 1983, and from 1991 till now it has
become the venue for exhibitions of many famous names of worldwide
contemporary art such as Antoni Tapies, Sam Francis, Jasper Johns,
and Roy Lichtenstein.
Due to difficulties in
transportation and storage as well as lack of information, Vietnamese
lacquer is still not widely known and properly appreciated abroad.
General
Director of Art Tunnel Gallery Nguyen Truong Son said it is the first
exhibition of Vietnamese lacquer paintings in the RoK. The country’s art
works have been displayed in the UK and Italy. Lacquer is a
special type of material extracted from lacquer tree. The use of lacquer
began in Vietnam in the ancient time. It is often used in making
furniture, worshiping items and crafts.
