Sang made the suggestion at a reception in Hanoi on November 6 for visiting Vice President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Danilo Astori, who is also President of the General Assembly and the Chamber of Senators.

The President went on to say that Vietnam is willing to serve as a bridge for Uruguay goods into the ASEAN market.

Apart from further promoting political ties, the two countries should soon implement the agreement signed, paving the way for trade and economic cooperation, especially in agriculture, oil, gas and telecommunications, said Sang.

Agreeing with the President’s proposal on the establishment of an inter-governmental committee at an early date, Astori shared his view that in the short-term, the two countries should implement the Framework Agreement signed in 2007 and forge new deals to boost bilateral economic and trade ties.

Vietnam’s potential in crude oil and gas would open up bilateral cooperation in the field, he said, confirming that his country supports the recognition of Vietnam as a market economy.

At a reception for the visiting leader the same day, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said Vietnam and the country should push up their cooperation in science and technology and in other fields of their strength.

Hung expressed his hope that the two legislative bodies will step up delegation exchanges and maintain cooperation at multilateral forums.

For his part, Astori pledged to make every effort to continuously promote relations between the two law-making bodies.

The Hanoi National University on November 6 presented Astori with an Honorary Doctorate for his contributions to the development of the relations between the two countries in general and to the university in particular.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan made the statement while receiving her Uruguayan counterpart Danilo Astori in Hanoi on November 6.

The Uruguayan Vice President, who is also President of the General Assembly and the Chamber of Senators, is paying a visit to Vietnam from Nov. 5-8.

Doan stressed that Vietnam and Uruguay have the potential to cooperate in many fields, including agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, agro-aquaculture processing, information technology, telecommunications, tourism and infrastructure.

She also asked the Uruguayan Government to create all possible favourable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to export goods and services to as well as invest in Uruguay.

Astori said Uruguay wants to increase cooperation with Vietnam in investment, agriculture, and farm produce processing, adding that his country can supply such products as beef, fruits and wine to Vietnam.

The two leaders agreed to promote the exchange of high-ranking delegations and establish suitable mechanisms and legal frameworks to boost multifaceted cooperation.

Both sides also decided to hold political consultations between the two Foreign Ministries on a regular basis, and coordinate with each other at international organisations and multilateral forums.

The two sides also pledged to support each other in running for a seat in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2014 – 2016 tenure.

Vice President Doan said Vietnam will back Uruguay’s bid to stand for election to the UN Economic and Social Council in the 2016 – 2018 tenure and to the UN Security Council for the 2016 – 2017 tenure.

Meanwhile, Uruguay will back Vietnam in running for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the 2020 – 2021 tenure, Astori said.

The Uruguayan Vice President is scheduled to visit Ho Chi Minh City and meet with local businesses on Nov. 7.
