Flood occurs very often in the central region of Vietnam.

Deputy Director General of the General Department of Hydrometeorology Hoang Duc Cuong said at a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on February 23 that in 2021, the average temperature in Vietnam increased by 0.7 degrees Celsius compared to the average of many years ago.

Regarding the activity of typhoons/tropical depressions in 2022, Cuong said that storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea are at the average level of about 10-12 storms, of which 4-6 may have direct impact on the mainland. In addition, storms are likely to appear earlier in than previous years.

According to Cuong, this year rain may occur earlier than the previous years in both the Central Highlands and the central region. However, the rainfall may be lower. The rainy season is likely to end early in these regions.

Statistics show that in the last 40 years, of a total of 374 storms operating in the East Sea, 148 affected Vietnam’s mainland, with 94 storms landing in the central region (accounting for over 64%), mainly in September-November.

With the characteristics of a dense river system, short length, narrow channel, very steep, and rapid flooding, the central region often suffers from flooding. This type of natural disaster causes great damage to the region and occurs with increasing severity.

Will extreme natural disasters occur again this year?

Rainfall in October, November and the first half of December in Vietnam’s central region is forecasted to be 30-50% higher than the average of previous years, but it will not be as intense as it was in 2020.
