Close to complete
Looking at the squad list for the March FIFA Days, it is clear that this is one of the rare moments when Vietnam possess both depth and balance across all positions.
In goal, the presence of Nguyen Filip, Dang Van Lam and Trung Kien provides a strong sense of security, as all three have maintained consistent form at club level during the 2025/26 season.
The defensive line also inspires confidence, with a mix of experienced and promising players. The return of Tran Dinh Trong and Doan Van Hau adds both depth and quality to the backline of the “Golden Star Warriors.”
On the flanks, Vietnam show notable balance, particularly on the left side, where options such as Cao Quang Vinh, Van Vi and Van Khang offer strong attacking support and the ability to create breakthroughs.
Up front, the sense of abundance is even more evident. The team features a range of attacking options, from seasoned players to emerging young talents.
Overall, coach Kim Sang Sik is working with a squad that shows no obvious weaknesses. The balance between lines, combined with squad depth, fuels optimism that Vietnam can deliver more convincing performances in upcoming matches.
What is missing?
On the surface, Vietnam appear close to complete in terms of quality and balance. However, a closer look reveals a crucial missing piece that could make the team far more formidable.
The most noticeable issue lies in the lack of a true leader in defense. Players such as Duy Manh, Nhat Minh, Thanh Chung, Van Hau and Dinh Trong all possess strong, even excellent, technical ability and are capable of fulfilling tactical demands.
What they lack, however, is the commanding presence and inspirational leadership once seen in the team - figures like Que Ngoc Hai or Do Hung Dung in the past, and more recently Bui Tien Dung.
Even Duy Manh, who has been entrusted with the captain’s armband under coach Kim Sang Sik, has yet to fully demonstrate the level of influence and motivational presence expected of a true leader, despite maintaining good cohesion in the dressing room.
Therefore, beyond building understanding within the defensive line, what Kim Sang Sik needs most at this moment is the emergence of a genuine leader - someone capable of connecting, guiding, and inspiring - to bring Vietnam closer to perfection.
