VietNamNet Bridge – The gold medal by swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc closed a successful day for Vietnam at the Southeast Asian Games 2011. With four more gold, Vietnam overtook Thailand to rank second on November 16.

On November 16, Vietnam won 12 gold medals, including three from shooting, two each from chess, wrestling, and rowing, one each from Vovinam, billiards & snooker and swimming.

Winning a total of 56 gold medals, 55 silver and 59 bronze, Vietnam moved up to the second place on the SEA Games medal tally after the host Indonesia with 83 gold, 66 silver and 69 bronze.

Dao Thien Hai and Nguyen Thi Thanh An snatched a gold in mixed double chess while Le Quang Liem got another gold in the men’s chess division.

Ngo Huu Vuong topped the chart in men’s running target with 556 points, followed by his compatriot Do Duc Hung with 550 points and Masruri of Indonesia with 543 points.

Hoang Xuan Vinh grabbed the other gold in men’s 25m center fire pistol with 585 points, above the Thai Jakkrit Panichpati at 580 and Ha Minh Thanh of Vietnam at 579.

The third gold for shooting was taken home by Nguyen Duy Hoang in men’s 50m 3-position rifle. This is the seventh gold medal of Vietnamese shooters.

Tran Thi Sam, Pham Thi Thao, Pham Thi Hue and Pham Thi Hai won two golds in rowing doubles and quartet events.



Young swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc took a gold for men’s 100m freestyle event, with 50.79 seconds, breaking the national record. This result is only 0.25 seconds less than the Olympics B standard. This is Phuoc’s second gold medal.

Ma Minh Cam won the first gold medal for Vietnam’s Billiards & snooker.

Wrestler Nguyen Huy Ha received a gold for men’s 55kg event while Nguyen The Anh took a gold for men’s 60kg event. Luong Thi Duyen took a silver for women’s 63kg.

Vietnam won the fifth gold medal for Vovinam, by Lam Dong Vuong and Tran The Thuong.

The 26th SEA Games is being held in Indonesia from November 11-22. At the 25th SEA Games, Thailand topped the chart with 86 gold medals leaving Vietnam at second with 83 and Indonesia at third with 43.
