Vietnam is prepared to work closely with ASEAN partners to support Myanmar's economic recovery, address social challenges and strengthen efforts against cross-border crime, Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung said during an informal meeting between ASEAN foreign ministers and Myanmar in Bangkok on July 12.

The meeting, chaired by Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa P. Lazaro in her capacity as chair of ASEAN in 2026, marked the first in-person gathering attended by ASEAN foreign ministers with Myanmar's foreign minister since 2021.

It was also the highest-level direct engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar's authorities since the country entered political turmoil, underscoring the bloc's commitment to dialogue and its central role in regional diplomacy.

Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung led the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting.

The discussions followed a directive from ASEAN leaders at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, calling for continued engagement with Myanmar in line with the bloc's Five-Point Consensus, the framework guiding ASEAN's efforts to help the country restore peace and stability.

During the meeting, Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe briefed his ASEAN counterparts on recent developments, including the country's 100-day plan and measures aimed at promoting peace, national reconciliation and stability. He also outlined ongoing engagement with various stakeholders inside Myanmar.

In candid and constructive discussions, ASEAN foreign ministers exchanged views on the situation and explored practical ways to strengthen regional support for Myanmar through more effective implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

The ministers reaffirmed ASEAN's commitment to maintaining dialogue with Myanmar's authorities while supporting a Myanmar-led process toward lasting peace, national reconciliation, security and sustainable development for both the country and the wider region.

Speaking at the meeting, Le Hoai Trung reaffirmed that Vietnam consistently regards Myanmar as a full member of ASEAN and considers the Five-Point Consensus the key framework for the bloc's engagement with the country.

He acknowledged measures undertaken by Myanmar's authorities to promote political stability, revive the economy, improve governance and strengthen efforts against transnational crime, including drug trafficking, cybercrime and security challenges in border areas.

Vietnam hopes these efforts to advance peace, national reconciliation and improve the safety and well-being of Myanmar's people will continue, he said.

Trung stressed that alongside implementing the Five-Point Consensus, ASEAN should pursue more practical initiatives, including maintaining regular, direct dialogue with Myanmar to better understand developments on the ground and encourage tangible progress.

Vietnam stands ready to cooperate closely with the ASEAN Chair and other member states in supporting Myanmar's economic recovery, addressing social issues, combating cross-border crime and expanding both bilateral and subregional cooperation, he said. Such efforts would contribute to peace, stability and sustainable development in Myanmar and the region while advancing ASEAN Community building.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Le Hoai Trung also held separate bilateral talks with Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe and Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa P. Lazaro to discuss issues of mutual interest.
