In the 2024–2025 academic year, Vietnamese test-takers achieved an average IELTS score of 6.2, placing Vietnam 29th out of 40 surveyed countries and territories. About 70% of candidates earned scores between 5.5 and 7.0.
This data was released recently by IELTS co-organizing bodies, covering global test performance. For the Academic module specifically, Vietnam's average score remains consistent with previous years.
Among Vietnamese candidates, the most common band score was 6.0 (21%), followed by 6.5 (18%) and 5.5 (17%). Only 5% scored 8.0 or above, while just 1% attained 8.5 or higher.
Compared to the global averages, Vietnamese candidates performed better in Listening and Writing. While the global average scores for these two skills were 6.4 and 6.0 respectively, Vietnamese candidates surpassed both. However, they underperformed in Reading and Speaking, where global averages were 6.7 and 6.4.
Among the 40 participating countries and territories, Germany led the rankings with an impressive average score of 7.6. Malaysia and Spain followed with 7.1, and Italy came in fourth at 7.0.
Germany also had the highest percentage of high-scoring test-takers, with 14% achieving 8.5 or above. Malaysia followed with 6%, and Spain with 5%.
In Southeast Asia, several countries outperformed Vietnam. Malaysia led the region with an average IELTS score of 7.1. The Philippines scored 6.8, Indonesia 6.7, while both Myanmar and India scored 6.6. Vietnam, with its average of 6.2, still ranked ahead of China (5.9) and Japan (5.8).
IELTS remains one of the world’s most widely recognized English language proficiency tests, commonly used for education, employment, and immigration purposes. More than 12,500 organizations globally accept IELTS results, including academic institutions, employers, and government agencies.
