
Vietnam continued its strong performance in international informatics competitions after winning six medals at APIO 2026.

Vietnam’s APIO 2026 team delivered an impressive result, reinforcing the country’s leading position in Southeast Asia.
Vietnamese contestants achieved a clean sweep of medals at APIO 2026, including two gold medals and four silvers.
The Ministry of Education and Training announced that all six members of Vietnam’s team competing at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) won medals, including two gold medals and four silver medals.
The two gold medals went to Nguyen Huu Tuan and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, both 12th-grade students at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Science, Vietnam National University Hanoi.
The four silver medals were awarded to Nguyen Khanh Phuc, a 10th-grade student at Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted in Ninh Binh Province; Thai Van Gia Kien, a 12th-grade student at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted in Ha Tinh Province; Dang Huy Hau, an 11th-grade student at Thang Long High School for the Gifted in Lam Dong Province; and Le Pham Duy Khoa, an 11th-grade student at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences under the University of Science, Vietnam National University Hanoi.
The 20th APIO was hosted by Taiwan (China) from May 9 to May 10 and attracted 37 teams from countries and territories, with a total of 1,043 contestants participating.
Among the 187 contestants receiving awards, 16 won gold medals, 47 secured silver medals and 93 earned bronze medals.
Vietnam’s delegation consisted of 15 contestants who competed online at the University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University Hanoi.
Under the competition regulations, Vietnam selected the six highest-scoring contestants for medal consideration.
Vietnam ranked second overall alongside Japan, behind Russia.
The achievement helped Vietnam maintain its leading position in Southeast Asia.
Based on the APIO results, the four best-performing contestants will represent Vietnam at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).
This year’s APIO exam was considered difficult and highly innovative, with two-thirds of the problems featuring new formats that required flexible and creative approaches.
Vietnamese contestants also achieved standout rankings, with Nguyen Huu Tuan winning a gold medal and placing sixth overall, while Nguyen Bui Duc Dung secured a gold medal and ranked 11th.
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, Vietnam’s achievements at international and regional informatics olympiads over many years continue to demonstrate that Vietnamese students possess computer science talent and analytical thinking skills among the best in the region.
