The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) is expected to extend the deadline for discontinuing 2G-only services beyond the originally scheduled date of September 15.

A new date has yet to be announced, as the government focuses on transitioning remaining users while also addressing the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi.

During a press conference on September 13, Deputy Director of the Telecommunications Department, Nguyen Phong Nha, highlighted the efforts by mobile operators to transition 2G-only subscribers to 4G services. Despite significant progress, approximately 3.4 million 2G users remain as of September 8.

To facilitate this transition, mobile operators have introduced financial support packages, offering up to 100% coverage of 4G phone costs for low-income households and users in remote areas.

Additionally, operators have been engaging in direct outreach campaigns, using a range of communication methods to encourage users to switch.

However, the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, which severely impacted northern provinces, has complicated recovery efforts.

The disaster has disrupted telecommunications infrastructure and daily life in many regions, prompting the Telecommunications Department to recommend delaying the 2G shutdown.

The MIC is currently reviewing the recommendation and has not yet set a new date for the 2G discontinuation.

Nha emphasized that, even after the shutdown, 2G infrastructure will remain operational for two more years to support IoT services and non-VoLTE 4G users.
