The Standing Committee for Anti-Corruption, Waste, and Malpractice met to review ongoing corruption cases, assess recent actions since the 26th meeting on August 14, and discuss directions for addressing upcoming cases.

Since the 26th meeting on August 14, 2024, the Central Inspection Committee has been closely investigating party organizations and members involved in cases concerning Phuc Son Group, Thuan An Group, and AIC Corporation. Investigations have led to recommendations for action against 247 party organizations, 441 members, and 26 cases referred for prosecution.

As of today, the Politburo, Secretariat, and Central Inspection Committee have disciplined six senior officials under Politburo and Secretariat management, bringing the total number of high-ranking officials disciplined this year to 52. Among these, 48 were implicated in cases overseen by the Anti-Corruption Steering Committee.

Legal proceedings across Vietnam have led to the prosecution of 734 cases, involving 1,681 defendants, and the first-instance trials of 1,002 cases with 2,703 defendants for economic and occupational corruption.

For cases monitored by the Steering Committee, investigations have concluded on four cases involving 58 defendants, with additional investigations on one case with nine defendants. The prosecution has issued indictments for four cases involving 52 defendants, and first-instance trials have commenced for three cases with 290 defendants, while appellate trials have occurred for three cases with 12 defendants. Recently, one new case involving five defendants was prosecuted, alongside additional charges for 22 individuals, including three senior officials under Politburo and Secretariat oversight.

Two high-profile cases-garnering significant public interest-have now concluded first-instance trials, including the case involving "Fraud, Money Laundering, and Illegal Currency Transportation" connected to SCB Bank, Van Thinh Phat Group, and related entities (phase two).

For the upcoming period, the Central Internal Affairs Committee stated that the Standing Committee has urged party organizations and relevant authorities to intensify efforts in preventing corruption, waste, and malpractice, while also emphasizing the importance of combating inefficiency and wastefulness.

Their instructions include swiftly handling complex and publicly sensitive corruption cases, with a target to complete investigations, prosecutions, and trials for 12 cases and two incidents by the end of 2024.

The Committee aims to bring two high-priority cases to trial as planned: the case involving the Project Management Unit for Medical Construction under Bac Ninh Department of Health and the International Progressive Corporation (AIC) and the case related to Xuyen Viet Oil Trading, Transport, and Tourism Company and associated organizations.

They also instructed a review and resolution of incomplete or delayed projects that waste state and social resources, prioritizing projects such as the construction of Bach Mai Hospital’s second facility, Viet Duc Hospital’s second facility, the Ho Chi Minh City anti-tide flooding project, and operational renewable energy projects pending connection to the grid.
