On the afternoon of Sept. 17 local time, Vietnam's national flag was prominently displayed on electronic screens at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the United States.
Alongside the red flag with a yellow star, the screens carried the message: "Congratulations Vietnam! From Frontier to Emerging Market."
The message marked a milestone years in the making and highlighted Vietnam's transition into a new chapter in its standing within global capital markets.
On the occasion, Alex Hong, NYSE's co-head of capital markets for the Asia-Pacific region, congratulated Vietnam.
On behalf of NYSE, Hong recognized the efforts of the Vietnamese people, government and business community in reaching the market-upgrade milestone.
According to the NYSE representative, the achievement was the result of years of persistent reforms, reflecting the government's strategic vision, efforts by the business community and the trust Vietnam has gradually built with the international community.
Hong stressed that the upgrade was not simply recognition of what had already been achieved.
"The upgrade is not a destination, but a gateway," the NYSE representative said.
A new gateway to global capital
According to NYSE, the transition from frontier to emerging-market status could create opportunities for improved liquidity, greater access to global capital and stronger connections between Vietnamese businesses and international markets.
NYSE also expressed its desire to continue working with Vietnam to build bridges between domestic and international capital markets as the country assumes a growing role internationally.
The milestone will be followed by the "Vietnam Officially Joins the Global Index Basket – FTSE Russell Global Equity Index Series" (FTSE GEIS) conference, organized in Hanoi on Sept. 18 by Vietnam's Ministry of Finance in coordination with FTSE Russell.
The conference comes just before FTSE Russell's reclassification of Vietnam's stock market from frontier to secondary emerging-market status takes effect at the market open on Sept. 21. FTSE Russell confirmed the reclassification in April following an interim review of Vietnam's progress in improving market access.
According to Vietnam's State Securities Commission, the event will bring together officials from the Ministry of Finance and the commission, as well as representatives from FTSE Russell, the World Bank and a range of international financial institutions, investment funds and global custodian banks.
Notably, international guests include representatives from BlackRock and Vanguard, two of the world's largest asset managers, with more than $15 trillion and approximately $10-12 trillion in assets under management, respectively.
According to information released ahead of the event, Vanguard's emerging-market index funds have committed to allocating capital and adding Vietnamese stocks to their portfolios from Sept. 21, 2026.
The appearance of Vietnam's flag at NYSE therefore carries more than symbolic significance. It comes just before the Vietnamese stock market enters a new classification, accompanied by expectations of deeper connections with international capital flows.
