On the morning of August 30, Ho Chi Minh City officially inaugurated the Binh Hung Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Binh Chanh District. The plant, now the largest of its kind in Vietnam, boasts a capacity of 469,000 cubic meters per day.

According to Luong Minh Phuc, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Traffic Projects, the Binh Hung Wastewater Treatment Plant is part of the city’s Water Environment Improvement Project for the Tau Hu - Ben Nghe - Doi - Te canal basin.

The project, which includes the expansion of the wastewater collection and treatment system, has a total investment of nearly VND 11,300 billion, funded by Japanese ODA loans and domestic counterpart funds.

The Binh Hung plant is the largest component of the project's second phase and is designed to collect and treat domestic wastewater from an area covering more than 2,500 hectares across districts 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 11.

Initially, wastewater from these areas is collected and directed to the Dong Dieu pumping station in District 8 through a network of sewers constructed under the project's Package G.

At the pumping station, the wastewater undergoes preliminary treatment to remove sand and debris before being pumped through a 2.8-kilometer transmission pipeline to the Binh Hung plant for comprehensive treatment, after which it is safely discharged into the environment. This process significantly reduces pollution in the Tau Hu - Ben Nghe - Doi - Te canal basin.

Following the inauguration, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee assigned the Center for Technical Infrastructure Management (under the Department of Construction) to manage and operate the plant.

At the ceremony, Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, emphasized the city's commitment to environmental protection, including enhancing green spaces, waste management, and canal restoration to improve residents' quality of life.

The city aims to ensure that by 2030, 100% of domestic wastewater across its 12 drainage basins - totaling approximately 3 million cubic meters per day - will be collected and treated.

With the expansion and operation of the Binh Hung plant, the city's wastewater collection and treatment capacity will increase from 20.6% to 40.8%. Ho Chi Minh City projects that by 2025, wastewater treatment will reach 71.3% once the Nhiêu Loc - Thi Nghe Wastewater Treatment Plant in Thu Duc City, with a capacity of 480,000 cubic meters per day, becomes operational.
