Head coach Kim Sang Sik has breathed a sigh of relief as Vietnam’s top goalkeeper, Dinh Trieu, returns to training.
However, the South Korean strategist may still opt against using him in the upcoming matches against Cambodia and Laos.
Dinh Trieu’s return to training
Ahead of Vietnam’s training camp, Nguyen Filip was unavailable due to personal commitments, leaving Dinh Trieu as the only experienced goalkeeper for the national team.
However, a back injury put his participation in doubt, prompting Kim Sang Sik to call up Trinh Xuan Hoang as a backup.
After several days of treatment, Dinh Trieu has resumed training with his teammates, bringing much-needed relief to Vietnam’s coaching staff. His return is especially significant given that the three remaining goalkeepers in the squad lack substantial international experience.
Will Kim Sang Sik take the risk?
Dinh Trieu remains a crucial player for Vietnam. The Hai Phong FC goalkeeper has been in outstanding form in the V-League, offering both skill and experience unmatched by his fellow keepers.
Despite his importance, Kim Sang Sik appears hesitant to rush him back onto the field. The head coach may choose to rest Dinh Trieu for at least the match against Cambodia, and possibly even against Laos on March 25.
The decision stems from concerns over his full recovery. Rather than risking a relapse, Kim Sang Sik may prioritize Dinh Trieu’s long-term fitness for tougher challenges ahead.
At the same time, the coach has three other goalkeepers in his squad who need playing time to gain experience. Giving them opportunities in these upcoming matches could benefit Vietnam’s squad depth in the long run.
Testing new talents
Although both Cambodia and Laos have shown improvement, particularly with the addition of naturalized players, Vietnam is still considered the stronger team - especially against Laos.
This reduces the urgency to rely on Dinh Trieu, as other goalkeepers like Trung Kien and Van Viet have been performing well in the V-League.
Dinh Trieu remains an essential figure for Vietnam and coach Kim Sang Sik, but his presence may not be necessary for these friendly matches and Asian Cup qualifiers at Go Dau Stadium.
