This marks the first visit by a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam to the United Kingdom in 12 years - a historic and highly significant event.

The visit coincides with the 15th anniversary of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership (2010-2025), offering an important opportunity to reflect on past cooperation, celebrate key achievements, and chart a new course for the future of bilateral relations.

It is also a timely occasion for both nations to discuss and align on elevating ties to new heights, enhancing political trust, and promoting more effective cooperation in traditional sectors such as trade and investment, education and training, and science and technology.

The visit is expected to expand collaboration in emerging areas of UK strength and Vietnamese development priorities, including finance, high technology, strategic infrastructure, green energy, and sustainable growth.

The trip affirms Vietnam’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, diversification, and multilateralism - committed to peace, cooperation, and development - and contributes to enhancing Vietnam’s international profile and influence both regionally and globally.

Ahead of the visit, Ambassador Do Minh Hung stated that General Secretary To Lam is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and meet with UK parliamentary leaders to discuss measures to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations.

He is also expected to attend and deliver a keynote speech at a high-level economic forum featuring major UK enterprises to promote cooperation in finance and banking, energy, science and technology, and green development.

At the University of Oxford - a world-leading research and education hub - the General Secretary is set to give a major policy address outlining his vision for Vietnam-UK relations and the nation’s path forward in the era of national resurgence.

Additionally, the General Secretary will meet with representatives of the Vietnamese community living, studying, and working in the UK. The engagement highlights the consistent policy of the Party and State in supporting overseas Vietnamese communities and his personal attention to the diaspora in the United Kingdom.
