The visit comes at the invitation of Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his spouse.

This will be Mr. To Lam’s first visit to Thailand as Party General Secretary and President.

The comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Thailand has continued to develop positively in recent years.

Thailand has consistently attached importance to strengthening friendly cooperation with Vietnam, while both sides have maintained regular high-level exchanges.

Thailand is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner within ASEAN.

In 2025, bilateral trade reached $22.1 billion, up 9% compared to 2024.

During the first four months of 2026, two-way trade totaled nearly $8.6 billion, marking a 24% increase year-on-year.

Vietnam’s major exports to Thailand include phones, computers, electronic products and components, machinery, transport equipment and spare parts, chemical products, steel, crude oil, garments, fruits, vegetables and seafood.

Key imports from Thailand include computers, electronic products and components, completely built automobiles, household electrical appliances and parts, machinery, automotive components, plastics, metals and chemicals.

In terms of investment, Thailand currently has 797 valid projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of $15.4 billion.

Thailand ranks eighth among 153 countries and territories investing in Vietnam and second among ASEAN investors.

Vietnam has more than 20 active investment projects in Thailand with total registered capital of around $40 million.

These projects are mainly concentrated in manufacturing and processing industries, real estate and wholesale-retail sectors.

The two countries are also promoting concrete plans under their “three connections” strategy, focusing on supply chain connectivity, business and local-level cooperation, and sustainable growth strategies.

In defense and security cooperation, both sides have effectively maintained bilateral mechanisms while coordinating efforts against transnational crime, military training, air force and naval cooperation, as well as joint maritime patrols.

Tourism, cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties have also continued to expand.

In 2025, more than 660,300 Vietnamese tourists visited Thailand, ranking 17th among Thailand’s international visitor markets.

Meanwhile, nearly 458,000 Thai tourists traveled to Vietnam, ranking 11th among Vietnam’s international arrivals.

Thailand is currently promoting its “Six Countries, One Destination” tourism cooperation initiative.

At present, 20 Vietnamese provinces and cities have established cooperation or twinning agreements with Thai localities.

The Vietnamese community in Thailand numbers more than 100,000 people, living across the country but mainly concentrated in northeastern provinces.

Between 2,000 and 3,000 Vietnamese students are currently studying and conducting research in Thailand.

The Thai government has recognized the legal status of the Vietnamese community regarding residence and employment.

In several localities, Vietnamese expatriates hold respected positions and influence within society.

The Vietnamese community in Thailand has a long-standing patriotic and revolutionary tradition, with strong respect for President Ho Chi Minh and deep ties to their homeland.

The overseas Vietnamese community has made significant contributions to Vietnam’s national liberation, reunification and development efforts.

Most Vietnamese expatriates in Thailand now enjoy stable economic conditions, generally above the local average.

Many work in services and small businesses, while some have successfully built large-scale enterprises and service companies.

Several overseas Vietnamese businesses have invested back in Vietnam, though overall investment remains relatively modest.

Tran Thuong
