Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong on Sept. 25 signed Decision No. 2509/QD-BVHTTDL approving the film as Vietnam’s entry.

The decision was made based on a recommendation from the head of the Cinema Department and the minutes of a meeting of the national film selection council.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has instructed the film’s two production companies to work closely with the Cinema Department to complete the registration process and submit the required documents, a DCP version of the film and a copy with English subtitles in accordance with the organizers’ requirements.

The deadline for submitting the materials and the film for the 99th Academy Awards is 5 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2026.

The selection of “Spirit Guardians: The Last Secret of the First Emperor” as Vietnam’s official entry has drawn considerable attention and expectations from film professionals and domestic audiences.

Set in the turbulent period following the death of King Dinh Tien Hoang, the film follows seven warriors entrusted with a top-secret mission.

They must transport 99 coffins in seven different directions to mislead enemies plotting to violate the king’s tomb, a site regarded in the story as a source of the nation’s prosperity and spiritual power.

Blending history with legend, the film explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice and devotion to the country.

It also conveys a broader message about protecting the nation’s sacred land: not only should the heritage left by previous generations be preserved, but every part of Vietnam’s territory represents the blood, sacrifice and determination of generations who defended the country.

The film was produced with an investment of VND100 billion (about $3.8 million) but grossed only VND38 billion (about $1.4 million) after one month in theaters.
