The National Assembly approved the relief of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc from the Prime Minister position for the 2016 – 2021 tenure on April 2 morning, part of its ongoing 11th session in Hanoi.

By secret ballot, 446 or 92.92 percent of the 452 deputies present at the plenary sitting voted for the resolution on the relief, which will take effect when a new PM is elected.

On behalf of the parliament, Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue thanked Nguyen Xuan Phuc for the latter’s performance over the past years.

On April 1 afternoon, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong submitted the relief proposal to the NA, and legislators later held group discussion about this issue.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc, born on July 20, 1954, is a Politburo member in the 11th, 12th, and 13th tenures; a member of the Party Central Committee in the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th tenures; and an NA deputy in the 11th, 13th, and 14th tenures.

He served as the PM for the 2011 – 2016 tenure from April to July 2016. He was elected to this post for the 2016 – 2021 tenure at the first session of the 14th parliament.

At a recent press conference, NA Secretary General and Chairman of the NA Office Nguyen Hanh Phuc said PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc was proposed to be elected the President of Vietnam, and that this is the first time an incumbent PM was nominated for the State Presidency.

The past five years has seen PM Phuc and his assistants within the Cabinet work hard in order to help the nation get through numerous turbulent periods and record a range of important achievements.

Most notably, Government leaders made 570 working trips to localities and agencies nationwide in order to address shortcomings and devise suitable solutions.

The Government has gradually finalised the socialist-oriented market economy mechanism and perfected legislation, with priority given to mobilising resources for national development and ironing out any potential snags.

The past term has also seen the Government remain steadfast in its overall goal of maintaining macroeconomic stability, reigning in inflation, ensuring major balances, and creating a favourable environment for economic growth.

At present, Vietnamese foreign exchange reserves have reached approximately US$100 billion, a record high figure, while its public debt to GDP ratio has witnessed a considerable drop from 64.5% at the beginning of its tenure to 55.3% at present.

Lawmakers are scheduled to elect a new Prime Minister on April 5, with the new Government leader set to take an oath on the same day.

Vuong Dinh Hue elected as Chairman of NA, National Election Council

Vuong Dinh Hue, Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, was elected as Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) and the National Election Council (NEC) at the 11th sitting of the 14th legislature on March 31 morning.

Of the 18 Politburo members, 17 have been nominated to run for the 15th National Assembly. The only Politburo member who will not stand for election is Ho Chi Minh City Party Secretary Nguyen Van Nen.
