Nguyen Huy Dung, deputy minister of Information and Communications, unveiled this plan at an event held on January 26 to announce the decision on establishing the Danang Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Training (DSAC).
According to Dung, Danang takes the lead in this groundbreaking initiative, and Hanoi and HCMC will soon follow suit.
International cooperation will be needed to promote the semiconductor microchip industry, he said.
Vietnam’s vision is to cultivate startups with a strong emphasis on design and workforce training. The country aims to attract foreign direct investment for assembly, testing, packaging of semiconductor chips, and the establishment of foundries manufacturing chips that serve as components in smartphones and electric vehicles.
As part of the national strategy, five prominent educational institutions will be chosen to train the semiconductor workforce. These institutions include Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Vietnam National University in HCMC, Hanoi Polytechnic University, FPT University, and Danang University of Science and Technology.
By 2030, Vietnam will make efforts to have 50,000 chip design engineers, 20,000 semiconductor electronic engineers, and another 500,000 individuals working in the semiconductor industry, according to Dung.
