VietNamNet Bridge - The Vietnam U-16 football team missed their chance to reach the quarter-finals of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U16 Championship after being defeated 3-1 by Australia on October 27.
U-16 Vietnam started the game determined to win and created a balance with Australia during the first half.
After the break, Xuan Nam opened the score for U-16 Vietnam in the 49th minute, but Jesse Makarounas equalised for U-16 Australia ten minutes later. From the 67th minute, Australia played with only ten men after Kwabena Boahene was sent off. However, U-16 Vietnam could not take the advantage and it was the Australian players who took the lead as Connor Chapman helped them widen the gap to 2-1 by scoring a goal from an offside position.
U-16 Vietnam intensified their attacks after that in order to equalise but their loose defence cost them dearly. Ha Long fouled inside the box after an Australian counter-attack and Makarounas made no mistakes and sealed the 3-1 victory for Australia from the penalty spot.
In another match, U-16 Japan edged U-16 Timor Leste 1-0 to win the ticket to the quarter-finals together with U-16 Australia. After two consecutive losses, U-16 Vietnam and U-16 Timor Leste officially said goodbye to the tournament.
