In the final stretch of Group F's second qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in Asia, Vietnam faced setbacks, notably a 3-1 defeat against Iraq, leaving them in 3rd place with 6 points. Despite a promising start under former coach Philippe Troussier, including two losses to direct competitor Indonesia, Vietnam bid farewell to their World Cup aspirations.

Next on the agenda is the third qualifying round for the 2027 Asian Cup, beginning in March 2025 with 24 teams divided into 6 groups. Each group will compete in a round-robin format, with the top six teams securing spots in the Asian Cup finals in Saudi Arabia. This format poses a significant challenge, as only group winners will advance, unlike previous editions where the top two teams progressed.

Despite the tough road ahead, Vietnam holds an advantageous position as a likely top-seeded team due to their FIFA world ranking of 115th, potentially easing their path against less formidable opponents.

Before tackling the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Vietnam will focus on the 2024 AFF Cup, aiming to advance to the final match of the tournament.

The team will reconvene during FIFA Days in September, October, and November to prepare for the Southeast Asian Championship, with additional opportunities for player selection and tactical refinement during local football tournaments.

Coach Kim Sang Sik, who has already overseen two matches resulting in one win and one loss in June, will have ample time to mold his squad and develop their playing style for the upcoming challenges.

The success of the Korean coach and the resurgence of fan confidence will hinge on Vietnam's performance in the 2024 AFF Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
