The Communist Party Central Secretariat has just asked localities not to organise firework displays for the Tet Lunar New Year.

The instruction was stipulated in the Directive No. 11-CT/TƯ signed on December 20 by permanent member of the Party Central Committee's Secretariat Dinh The Huynh.

The directive also stated that state officials at all levels are not allowed to pay Tet visits or give gifts to their bosses or staff this year.

There will be no firework displays during Tet celebrations to save the funds for low-income, disadvantaged people and flood victims in the central region, the directive said.

The directive noted that 2016 was the first year to carry out the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress and the five-year plan from 2016-2020 with many challenges ahead.

The world economy showed low growth while losses caused due to climate change and environmental disasters have risen, together with the East Sea concerns, which posed the need to cut unnecessary costs and focus on necessary tasks.

At the November cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also announced a ban on government officials and civil servants offering gifts to their superiors during Tet which will fall on January 28.
