Vietnam to host AFC U14 Girls’ Championship

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s U14 Girls’ Regional Championship (ASEAN zone) is set to get underway in the Youth Football Training Centre of the Vietnam Football Federation in Hanoi on June 20-28.

Nine teams from Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and the host Vietnam will compete in the tournament.

According to the draw in March 2015, Vietnam is in group B along with Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. The remaining five teams arelisted in group A.

Vietnam team will gather on May 20 for a one-month training course before entering the competition.

Vinh fails in world cup in US

Vietnamese marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh failed in his favourite sport in the men's 10m air pistol at the ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol competition in Fort Benning, the United States, early morning Vietnamese time on May 19.

Vinh and two other Vietnamese players, Tran Quoc Cuong and Nguyen Hoang Phuong, didn't compete successfully in the qualifying round.

Vinh only gained 579 points to rank 18th out of 95 athletes. While Phuong had 574 points to rank 41st and Cuong took 572 points to gain the 50th place.

The gold medal went to Jin Jongoh of South Korea. Vladimir Isakov of Russia won the silver medal and Joao Costa of Portugal received the bronze medal.

Earlier, 40-year-old Vinh bagged a bronze medal in the men's 50m pistol competition.

Vinh of the Military team won the gold medal in this sport in the Changwon World Cup in South Korea in 2013 and World Cup in Fort Benning in the US last year.

After the World Cup, Vietnamese athletes will return home to prepare for the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

National badminton championships begin in Bac Giang

The National Team Badminton Championships kicked off yesterday in Bac Giang Province.

The 90 participating athletes, seven men's and seven women's teams, will start off competing in two groups with a round-robin format.

Two leading teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The championships will wrap up on Sunday.

14th annual Off-Road Triathlon returns to Ho Tram Beach

Viet Nam's premier multi-sport event, the Le Fruit Off-Road Triathlon, will take place on May 30 at Ho Tram Beach near Vung Tau in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. The event includes a swim in the Eastern Sea, bike ride toward the rainforest, and run along the beach.

This year, new challenges include a Duathlon (no-swimming option), a Families' Trophy, and two triathlon events for children. Participants in the event, which is in its 14th year, include expatriates, local Vietnamese and others from abroad.
