Vietnam U19 collected all three points with a 3-0 victory over Timor-Leste U19. Yet despite the comfortable scoreline, the team's display offered more reasons for reflection than celebration.
A satisfactory result
Heading into the match, Vietnam U19's objective was not only to secure victory but also to win by a significant margin to strengthen its position in the race for a semifinal berth in Group A.
Although Vietnam opened the scoring early, a disciplined Timor-Leste side proved difficult to break down. It took until the closing stages for the team to finally put the game beyond doubt with additional goals.
Even so, a 3-0 victory represents a satisfactory outcome for head coach Yutaka Ikeuchi and his players. Vietnam began its campaign with three points, kept a clean sheet and gained a valuable advantage ahead of more demanding fixtures.
The standout performer was undoubtedly striker Cong Hau. The young forward enjoyed a memorable outing, scoring all three goals for Vietnam U19. A hat-trick in the opening match not only delivered maximum points but should also provide a major confidence boost for the remainder of the tournament.
Areas of concern remain
Behind the 3-0 scoreline, however, there were several issues that will concern the coaching staff, particularly regarding the team's overall play.
Vietnam started brightly, moving the ball quickly and creating several opportunities. But once Timor-Leste increased the intensity of its pressing and physical challenges, Ikeuchi's players struggled to maintain rhythm and control.
The team's attacking organization lacked consistency, causing many promising moves to break down. Meanwhile, Timor-Leste's occasional counterattacks exposed moments of uncertainty in Vietnam's defensive structure.
Fortunately for Vietnam, the opponent lacked the quality needed to capitalize on the few chances it created.
Finishing was another area that requires improvement. After an encouraging opening spell, Vietnam's attackers found it increasingly difficult to create clear opportunities as Timor-Leste compressed space and raised the intensity of contests.
Several excellent chances went begging. Even Cong Hau, despite scoring all three goals, missed opportunities that should have resulted in additional strikes, sending the ball wide in situations where many expected him to score.
Had Vietnam been more clinical, the margin of victory could have been significantly larger.
Of course, it would be unfair to be overly critical of a young team in its first match of a tournament. Every campaign requires an adjustment period, and the most important takeaway remains the victory and the confidence gained from a successful start.
However, if Vietnam U19 hopes to make a deep run in the competition, improvements will be needed both in overall play and in converting scoring opportunities.
Myanmar and especially Indonesia will present challenges far greater than those posed by Timor-Leste.
The hope for Ikeuchi and his players is that this opening victory serves as an effective warm-up, allowing the team to find its rhythm and deliver more convincing performances when the decisive matches arrive.
