Facing a Chilean side considered evenly matched, Vietnam’s U21 women’s volleyball team is confident of securing victory in the 17th-20th place playoffs at the 2025 FIVB U21 World Championship, set for 8:00 p.m. on August 15.
After overcoming the shock of a sudden sanction from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), Vietnam defeated Egypt 3-1 in the 17th-24th place playoffs.
That win set up their match with Chile, who currently rank 17th in the world, eight places above Vietnam. Despite this, both teams are seen as having equal chances, with head coach Nguyen Trong Linh’s squad slightly favored thanks to their consistent form in this year’s tournament.
Even without their full roster - two players were barred from competing - Vietnam still managed to beat Puerto Rico in their final group match and then upset Egypt despite the psychological strain of the FIVB ruling.
Chile enter the match after a 3-0 victory over Mexico. In the group stage, they beat Tunisia (3-1) and Bulgaria (3-2), but lost to Japan (1-3), Brazil (0-3), and Thailand (0-3).
While Chile hold an advantage in height and physical strength, Vietnam are known for their flexibility, high performance across all positions, and strong team chemistry. Coach Nguyen Trong Linh’s players are determined to pull off another surprise at the championship with a win over Chile.
The Vietnam vs. Chile match will be played in Indonesia at 8:00 p.m. on August 15.
