The Ministry of Construction has requested the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to work with airlines to study and determine a roadmap for transferring international flight routes from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Long Thanh International Airport.

According to the feasibility study report for Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport, the operational plan envisions Long Thanh handling all international flights (routes over 1,000 km and other flights selected by airlines), new flights that Tan Son Nhat cannot accommodate, and non-scheduled flights.

Tan Son Nhat would continue to operate code C aircraft (A321/320, B737, etc.) or international routes under 1,000 km, with operational criteria reviewed after the first five years.

Currently, ACV and its consultants recommend transferring all regular international flights from Tan Son Nhat to Long Thanh to maximize the investment’s efficiency. However, the ministry noted that some airlines have expressed concerns. It has therefore tasked the CAAV with coordinating discussions to carefully assess the operational impact and finalize a roadmap, with a formal proposal to be submitted by September 2025.

Previously, ACV and its consultants proposed two options:

Transfer all international flights to Long Thanh.

Split international operations between Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat.

ACV has urged approval for a phased relocation of all regular international flights to Long Thanh as part of a long-term strategy to leverage economies of scale, strengthen Vietnam’s position in the regional aviation market, and support economic growth.

The corporation emphasized that route allocation is a critical factor that could significantly impact the business performance of Vietnamese airlines.
