Vietnamese student athletes won two bronze medals to help the country rank 58th on the medal table of the 2015 Summer Universiade held in Gwangju, the Republic of Korea (RoK) from July 3-14.
Vietnam sent six athletes competing in all five Taekwondo- Poomsae events. Le Hieu Nghia, Le Thanh Trung and Nguyen Thien Phung brought home a bronze in the men's team Poomsae on July 8, while Nguyen Thien Phung and Tuyet Van Chau won another bronze in the mixed pair Poomsae the same day.
Vietnam ended their campaign with two bronzes and shared the 58th place with Finland, Malaysia and Sweden.
After 13 days of competition, hosts RoK won the top position with 47 gold, 32 silver and 29 bronze medals, followed by Russia with 34 golds, 39 silvers and 49 bronzes, and China with 34 golds, 22 silvers and 16 bronzes.
Among Southeast Asian countries participating in the 28th Universiade, Thailand recorded the best results with two gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals to rank 20th on the medal tally. Indonesia won one silver and three bronzes to rank 49th on the medal table.
The event drew the participation of over 13,182 athletes and officials from 148 countries and territories around the world, the largest event ever compared to more than 11,759 people in the 2013 Universiade held in Kazan, Russia.
The athletes, aged 17-28, competed in 21 sports with 272 medal sets.
This is the third time the RoK has organised the Games, after the 1997 Winter Universiade in Muju and the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu.
