He faced off against strong rivals in the men’s 105kg junior category. By putting in a strong performance, the Vietnamese athlete successfully lifted 182.5kg in the bench press.
In the deadlift, Hung also bagged a silver medal after lifting a total of 307.5kg.
The local powerlifter clinched a bronze medal in the squats with a final result of 295kg.
In the final, Hung outplayed his Iranian opponent with a total of 762.5kg, taking the first gold medal for Vietnam at the tournament.
The Asian Classic Powerlifting Championships 2023, organised by the Asian Powerlifting Federation, is underway in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from December 10 to 18.
This year the event draws the participation of 453 athletes from 27 countries and territories worldwide to vie for medals in 18 categories for both men and women.
Vietnam has sent three athletes to the tournament - Dang The Hung in the men’s 105kg junior category, Bui Lan Anh in the women’s 47kg open category, and Linda Le in the women’s 52kg open category.
Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at a maximum weight on three lifts, including squats, bench press, and deadlift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves the athlete attempting a maximum weight in a single-lift effort of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Powerlifting follows the three-attempt format.
