Pham Thi Thao and Pham Thi Hai.
Good news was sent from South Korea by the national weightlifting and rowing teams. At the Asian rowing championships in Chunggju, women's duo Pham Thi Thao and Pham Thi Hai finished third in the double sculls event with a time of 7min 18.72sec behind rivals from South Korea and Japan.
The result was enough to ensure them a place at the London Games this summer. The women successfully fulfilled the target of one ticket set for the whole team before they departed. The tournament, which was the last Olympic qualifier for the discipline, wrapped up in Chungju City, South Korea, last Friday.
At the Southeast Asian Games 26 last year, they won two gold medals for Vietnam.
In Pyeongtaek, Vietnamese weightlifters also took two cards to the Olympics. Tran Le Quoc Toan won a silver medal for men’s 56kg category. In women’s category, the Vietnamese team finished fourth, entering the list of six top teams that are granted one card each.
The General Department of Sports and Physical Training will select and name the athlete later.
So far, Vietnam has won 15 cards to the Olympics, the highest in Vietnam’s history at the Olympics.
The number can rise because some sports teams of Vietnam will compete for Olympic cards in May.
This is the first time Vietnam has an official card for rowing. This card is highly meaningful for the rowing team after two rowers fleeing the team in Australia.
