This comes after the Ho Chi Minh City player surprised his opponent by putting in an outstanding performance in Iran to qualify for the semi-finals.

Dang, ranking 97th in the world, then went on to defeat Viren Nettasinghe of Sri Lanka, 76th globally, in the semi-final round.

The 23-year-old player then trounced Sathish Kumar of India, 49th globally, 2-0 in the final round to lift the trophy for the first time.

Hai Dang accumulated 4,000 points to raise his total points to 22,570 and is expected to enter the Top 80 of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) global rankings in the coming time.

The Iran Fajr International got underway in Tehran from January 30 to February 5 and is one part of the Fajr decade festival. The tournament is one of the oldest in the Western Asia.

Vietnam sent two players to the competition, including Nguyen Hai Dang, 97th globally, and Le Duc Phat, 83rd globally.
