On September 26, Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang responded to VietNamNet's inquiries regarding the attack on a diplomatic convoy in Pakistan.
According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Pakistan, on September 22, a convoy consisting of police escort vehicles and vehicles carrying ambassadors from 12 countries, including Vietnam’s Ambassador to Pakistan, was struck by an IED while traveling to the Swat Tourism Development Forum in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The explosion resulted in the death of one police officer and injured four others. However, all vehicles carrying the ambassadors were unharmed.
“Vietnam strongly condemns this attack and extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” the spokesperson stated.
“We call on the Pakistani authorities to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic missions and the foreign community, including the Vietnamese nationals living, studying, and working in the country,” Hang added.
Local police reported that the diplomatic convoy was visiting the region at the invitation of the local Chamber of Commerce. The security escort was hit by an IED placed on the roadside.
All diplomats were reported safe and have since returned to Islamabad.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack.
