The prize was launched by the Japan-based group Benesse Holdings in co-operation with Singapore Biennale 2016 (SB2016). This year, it will award an outstanding artist who embodies an experimental and critical spirit through art.
Khánh and four artists, including Martha Atienza of the Philippines, Ade Darmawan of Indonesia, Qiu Zhijie of China and Pannaphan Yodmanee of Thailand, who are on the shortlist, are displaying their works at the Biennale 2016.
This year’s event, which features 60 artists from many countries, will run through February.
The winning artist will receive a commission to create a work to be exhibited at Benesse Art Site Naoshima in Japan, and US$25,000 in cash.
The winner will be announced at the Singapore Art Week at Singapore Art Museum in January.
Born in 1972 in Da Nang Province, Khanh faces challenges in painting, sculpture, performance and installation art. His works feature VN's traditional culture and history.
Khanh has organised solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad.
