Hoang Anh Tuan (Weightlifting)
Vietnamese weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan won a bronze medal in the men’s 56kg at the 2005 World Weightlifting Championships.
He then won a silver medal at the 2006 Asian Games at 56kg.
Tuan bagged a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics after lifting a total 290kg.
He was named 2008 Vietnam Sportsman of the Year.
Tran Hieu Ngan (Taekwondo)
Tran Hieu Ngan is a Vietnamese Taekwondo athlete who competed in the women’s 49-57kg weight class at the 2000 Summer Olympics where she won a silver medal.
It was the only Vietnamese medal won during the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Hoang Xuan Vinh (Shooting)
In 2014, for the first time in the history of Vietnam’s shooting sports, a Vietnamese shooter has placed first in the rankings of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF), for the men’s 10m air pistol category.
The ISSF’s rankings are made based on the achievements of shooters at the tournaments in the official competition system.
Hoang Xuan Vinh, now a colonel in the army, achieved his current position thanks to his miraculous performance at the World Cup Fort Benning in the US in April 2014. He won a gold medal for the men’s 10m air pistol with 202.87 points and broke the world record.
Nguyen Tien Minh (Badminton)
Male badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh twice entered top 5 of the world’s rankings (in 2010 and 2013).
He has also won a bronze medal at the World Badminton Championship in 2013.
Nguyen Hoang Ngan (Karate)
Ngan is called the Queen of Vietnam Karatedo. She has been awarded many prizes in both regional and international tournaments.
She first placed in the World Championships 2008 and World Games 2009.
Ngan also obtained a silver medal at the Asian Games 2014 (ASIAD).
Le Quang Liem (Chess)
Vietnamese chess grandmaster Le Quang Liem was the Under-14 World Youth Chess Champion in 2005.
He twice won Aeroflot Open champion in 2010 and 2011.
Liem also won the 2013 World Blitz Chess Champion.
Phan Thi Ha Thanh (Gymnast)
Ha Thanh is a Vietnamese artistic gymnast from Haiphong. In 2011, she became the first gymnast to win a world medal for Vietnam, winning the bronze medal on Vault at the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Thach Kim Tuan (Weightlifting)
Tuan got a silver and two medals at the 2011 World Junior Weightlifting Championships in Malaysia.
In 2014, Tuan set two world records at the Junior World Championships in Russia’s Kazan and was honoured as the best athlete of the tournament. He also secured a silver medal at the Asian Games in the Republic of Korea along with one gold and two silver medals at the World Weightlifting Championships the same year.
