Thong had no difficulty dominating the competition that lured strong rivals including his teammate Pham Van Mach in the men's 60kg category.
Thong, Mach and three other competitors left their rivals behind to enter the final where the Vietnamese strongman once again proved his prowess.
Mach came second with a silver medal.
Thong, a Can Tho Province-born athlete, also triumphed at the Asian championships two months ago.
He is the third Vietnamese world champion since 2001.
According to coach Huynh Anh Thong, he put in a perfect performance which clearly showed off his muscles and swayed the judges.
He said the world title would be a great boost for Thong, who will compete at the Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar next month.
Former world champion Nguyen Van Lam also brought home a silver medal in the men's 70kg category behind Asian champion Somkhit Sumethowetchakun of Thailand.
The event has lured over 300 athletes from 40 countries and territories, and will close today.
