A breakthrough was made when, on June 7, Steve Jobs, Chief Executive Officer of Apple, launched iCloud, a computing-cloud technology service in San Francisco in the US. The free service package works on the application through the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac or PC.
With the service, the computer hard drive becomes useless. All the data of the users, including pictures, music files or electronic books can be posted on an electronic cloud and automatically stored there.
Previously, users would have to reserve 5G in their hard drive to store their database, while the hard drive is “just for show” now, because the electronic cloud can replace the hard drive to do the task of storing information. When users need the database, they can make wireless download of the database from the clouds to their devices.
With the service, people would not have to plug their devices into computers to update information, because the programs will automatically update via wireless connections. The users of Apple products which run iOS (including iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch), or Windows computers with iTunes can use the technology immediately.
Apple has also announced that it has completed the building of a database center worth one billion dollars for iCloud service in North Carolina in the US. Different types of data, including directories, mails, music on iTunes, pictures, applications and other information will be synchronized here.
Experts have commented that the service is really a breakthrough in technologies, which can lead to the rise of handy devices such as iPhones or iPads. People will not have to dependent on heavy storage equipments, always associated with personal computers.
Cloud services in Vietnam
Several years ago, the knowledge of Vietnamese businesses about computing cloud was very poor. However, many enterprises, which once kept indifference to the computing cloud, now show their interest in the model.
Analysts have forecast that computing cloud will become more popular and will be widely used in Vietnam by 2015.
FPT has recently cooperated with Microsoft to build a database center using computing cloud technology, while the group plans to provide the service on Vietnamese market in the near future.
Talking about the benefits computing cloud technology can bring, Nguyen Huy Cuong, General Director of Tinh Van Consulting, said that enterprises do not need to spend too much money on information technology infrastructure (servers, hundreds of personal computers) or on application upgrading. Meanwhile, they also do not have to spend money on the big workforce to run the systems, which will surely help them cut down expenses.
The only thing enterprises should do is to focus on their production and business and rely on computing cloud services.
According to Hoang Le Minh, Director of Institute of Software and Digital Content Industry (NISCI), computing cloud has the advantages in speed, storage costs, and architectural services, as well as in creating the foundation for many other information technology services.
The moves made by some big conglomerates in the world have also encouraged Vietnamese enterprises. Coca-Cola, for example, has signed an agreement to put all email accounts (about 75,000) to Microsoft Exchange Online.
However, no Vietnamese enterprise dares to do this.
Nguyen Thanh Son from Cisco Systems Vietnam has admitted that the policies, the bandwidth transmission and awareness of enterprises remain the biggest challenges for the new technology. With the technical barriers and the current information safety conditions, enterprises still think about if they should use computing cloud services.
Some enterprises said they have been using free cloud services such as Google Apps, but they still need more time to learn about the utilities and risks in information security.
