Carelessness may lead to trouble
Businesses say that protecting international domain names is the biggest headache for them, because the international domain name holders cannot enjoy the protection policy like the “.vn” domain name holders. Meanwhile, it will take a lot of time and money to follow the lawsuits to claim back domain names.
A representative of a farm produce trade company said recently, his partner complained that his company propagated depraved culture. The problem lied in the fact that the company’s international domain name was hijacked which then led to “black websites”. After that trouble, he decided to use the “.vn” domain names only for easier management.
However, according to Nguyen Xuan Tai, General Director of Naiscorp, the owner of Socbay website, the professional qualification of international domain name service providers is very high, so the security level of the domain names provided by them is reliable. Tai said that in this case, the trouble occurred because the user loosened the management.
Tai said that in 2009, socbay.com website was once attacked and had to stop operation for one day. However, the reason was that the Gmail account was out, not because of the error of the service provider. Therefore, Tai has advised businesses to register international domain names directly with foreign service providers, and use associated security services.
Agreeing with Tai, Tran Ngoc Anh, General Director of BOM Information Technology Company, said that all the domain names of the company have been registered directly with foreign service providers with the highest security level. Especially, Anh said, the email addresses of owners are always hidden, because he thinks that hackers like to attack the addresses rather than attacking directly to the system of international service providers.
He went on to say that at his company, all the domain names are being managed by himself, while he does not allow to share the same computers.
Meanwhile, according to Le Thi Thanh Phuong, Director of Dien Hoa Vietnam Corporation, an e-flora service provider, said that the company joins hands with partners to organize accidental attacks to the company’s system in order to assess the security level of the system, thus allowing to set up effective solutions to deal with the problem.
Making investment in the future
Businesses all agree that protecting domain names is a way of “making investment for the future,” therefore, it is necessary to spend money and time on the issue.
Experts say that in many cases, businesses lose their domain names to the hands of speculators, because the ideas of the businesses about the domain names leak out during the implementation. In some other cases, it is the officers of the service providers who register the domain names after they give consultancy to clients.
Therefore, Phuong of Dien Hoa Vietnam said that all the information about the services and operation of companies must be kept secret, and only the members of the board of directors can be informed about that.
Some businesses still keep indifferent
While other businesses have been hurriedly setting up plans to prevent the risks of losing the domain names, some others remain unruffled.
Experts have warned that these businesses will surely lose their domain names, sooner or later.
The owner of a resort reportedly asked a partner to register the domain name for him, because he was not keen on the procedures. The partner registered the domain name as requested, but the problem was that the domain name’s owner was not the owner of the resort. In this case, experts warn, the resort’s owner may lose his domain name in case the partner makes a U-turn.
